Gatsby's Mission Statement

Gatsby's mission statement

Most companies and organizations have mission statements.
For example, Google says this: “Google’s mission is to organize
the world‘s information and make it universally accessible and
useful.” What do you think Gatsby’s mission statement would
be? Write it and explain why you chose that statement. If you
have time, write similar mission statements for Nick, Daisy,
Tom, and/or any other characters.

  1. Gatsby's mission: to achieve a higher standard of life through money and the acceptance of Daisy Buchanan. I think this should be his missions statement because these are his goals; especially through Daisy's acceptance and love. I also believe that Gatsby thinks he is better in some way because he is now rich and can act in anyway he chooses.

    2. I agree with you kaitlyn because in the story nick says "It was when curiosity about Gatsby was at its highest that the lights in his house failed to go on one Saturday night- and, as obscurely as it had begun, his career as Trimalchio was over." basically saying that now that gatsby has daisy, he no-longer needs to impress her because he has her.

    3. I agree and disagree because I understand the Daisy part but I do not think that the money matters as much. This is because I think he only wanted the money to impress Daisy. You can see how much he loves Daisy when he stretches his arm towards the "green light"(Fitzgerald 26)

  2. Gatsby's mission is to have a good life he wants to make a lot of money, he doesn't care if its legal or not he just wants to make the most profit he possibly can. Gatsby uses money to have party's, make friends and to win Daisy. Another thing that he wants is to be accepted by the old money. I think his main mission statement is that he wants to gain a lot of money win over Daisy and get Tom out of the picture, be accepted by old money people and just have a good time in life.

    1. I agree with you because of what Fitzgerald says "Gatsby stood in the centre of the crimson carpet and gazed around with fascinated eyes" this shows that he does not care about who is in the room he is in love with Daisy and he does snot care if the world knows about it

    2. I would also agree with you because in the passage where Tom, Mr Sloan and Mrs Sloan come over to visit Gatsby and they "invite" him to go to dinner he rushes as fast as he possibly can to get ready because he wants to make friends with old money but they end up ditching him.

  3. Gatsby's mission is to make as much money as he can to impress Daisy and get her back so he can marry her. I chose this statement because he truly loved Daisy before he had to go fight in the war and when he got back he still loved her. The problem he ran into was that she had though he left her or had been killed and married a rich man, Tom Buchanan, to help her get over it. Through this Gatsby saw that in order to impress her he needed to be rich too. The only reason she had married Tom was because he had lots of money and because she thought Gatsby was gone. Gatsby figured that now that he was back, all he needed to do was get at least as much money as Tom and she would leave Tom and marry him. He went even father by getting a house across the bay from her and getting many things that he knew she would want like all of his shirts and his massive house. Overall I chose this statement because Gatsby mission was to get Daisy back and the only way that he felt he could do it was through being wealthy and showing it.

  4. Gatsby's mission statement would be "Make the guest happy and be able to fit in". Gatsby is always having these extravagant parties and only invites a rare few but allows many different types of people in. His guest feel welcome because of this variety of people and because he doesn't necessarily pick out who he wants at the parties. Like he once wanted to be accepted, he now wants his guest to feel accepted for who they are too. Gatsby's a very giving person as well; he once gave a new dress to a woman that ripped her dress while at one of his parties. He wants to make everyone feel happy maybe because he wasn't happy, he wants to surround himself with the positive energy that he does not have until Daisy comes back into his life.

    1. "I like to come," Lucille said. "I never care what I do, so I always have a good time. When I was here last I tore my gown on a chair, and he asked me my name and address - inside of a week I got a package from Croirier's with a new evening gown in it." (Fitzgerald 43) supports your statement because it's the direct quote from the event that you mentioned and it shows how Gatsby can be very caring and giving to those who may either not be able to afford a new gown or just overall sincere as such.

    2. This mission statement would be Gatsby's because those two things are things that he does throughout the book. For example, he gives a girl a new dress after she rips it. Also, Gatsby is trying to fit in with old money in stead of new money. He tries hard but he still comes off as an "elegant young roughneck"(Fitzgerald 48) and his "formality of speech just missed being absurd"(Fitzgerald 48). This shows that Gatsby tries really hard to fit in but sometimes it doesn't work. Therefore, Bailey is right.

  5. Gatsby's mission statement would be "Money can get you anything." I believe this would be his mission statement because he worked so hard to make good money, and be rich. He did all this for a girl he fell in love with, to meet her social class and her expectations. He through extravagant parities with all his money, showing it off, with orchestra's, bright lights, and many guests. He's the type of person that believes money can get him anything or in other words buy him happiness or in his case buy him Daisy. Especially after seeing Daisy get married to a very rich man Tom, he knows thats exactly what she likes, and thats exactly what he did for her. "Money can get you anything" might not be true in his case, but thats what he believes.

    1. I agree with Angela's mission statement because in the book Nick said to Gatsby "your place looks like the Worlds Fair". Nick is trying to say that Gatsby is just trying his money around having these extravagant party's that he has all the time.

      Delete
    2. I agree with what you say Gatsby's mission statement is "money can get you anything". I agree with this because Gatsby used his money to create image for himself and get Daisy. Gatsby used his money to buy the legendary house that earned him the popularity and his image. Gatsby said "it took me just three years to earn the money that bought the house". (Fitzgerald 95) Gatsby used money to get what he wanted, that is why I agree with that mission statement.

  6. I think that Gatsby's mission statement would be "to heck with the work I want to play all the time and get drunk". I think this because that is all the man ever does and it had become a popular theme in the book this thought that "LEts go to Gatsby's house get sloshed and then somehow find our way hoe and repeate" now I am not agenst drinking however I am agenst the people that think that this is all they can do is go to parties and get hammered. This would be a good mission statement or Gatsby because he is a bootlegger this is what this guy does for a living he does booze runs for his own personal gain and he also does this so that he can show Daisy that he can put out a good time and that he can get a lot of attention when he wants to put the effort in and do so this is why I think that "to heck with work I want to play all the time and get drunk would be a good mission statement for Gatsby.

    1. I do not agree with David's mission statement for Gatsby. In the novel when Gatsby tells Nick about his life he says " It was indirectly due to Cody that Gatsby drank so little". Proving that Gatsby does not drink making Davids comment wrong.

      Delete
    2. I disagree with this because Gatsby doesn't ever drink or get drunk. During his parties, he would have all the alcohol served, but "due to Cody that Gatsby drank so little. Sometimes in the course of gay parties women used to rub champagne into his hair; for himself he formed the habit of letting liquor alone." (106) He wanted to keep his head on straight so that he could keep his main goal of impressing Daisy in reach.

  7. I believe Gatsby's mission statement would be "The path to love is paved with wealth". This is because Gatsby has built himself up to be an extremely wealthy man in hopes of getting his love, Daisy. He thinks by throwing parties and showing off his power will win him his love.

    1. This is a great mission statement, because, this is what represents what Gatsby thinks. He thinks that because of what Daisy thinks, that wealth can get you any thing, including love and happiness. Even Nick understands that "her voice is full of money‘…That was it. I‘d never understood before. It was full of money – that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals‘ song of it…High in a white palace the king‘s daughter, the golden girl…‖ (120, 120)."

    2. I agree with you Marissa. Because when Gatsby is up in his room throwing his shirts in a pile Daisy is astonished."There're such beautiful shirts... it makes me sad because I've never seen such beautiful shirts before." (Fitzgerald 92)

  8. Gatsby's mission is to provide a wealthy and decent life for Daisy just as Tom is doing for her already. He became rich and funded a bootlegging service all because he wants to give Daisy a better life than he thinks what Tom could give her. Gatsby's whole life is about making Daisy happy, though however sad that is. He does his best to make a good impression on her by being the nice guy, even though it's been five years and her tastes have probably changed.

  9. Gatsby's mission statement is to make as much money as possible in any way possible. He wants to do this to impress Daisy and marry her. This could be his mission statement because he already has a lot of money and he is still trying to make more money by making a bootlegging business. Also he is obsessed with Daisy and he would do anything to get her to be his.

    1. This mission statement is true. Gatsby is trying to be something he's not and using the money to get respect, he realizes that West Egg is "the last fashionable of the two" and that it had a "thin beard of raw ivy" (Fitzgerald 5). The ivy represents him trying to be like the people of East Egg who have been there for a long time but he isn't.

  10. Gatsby's mission statement is one of perseverance. Gatsby has been and will continue to persevere his golden girl while always improving himself as a person. Gatsby is a man who takes what he pleases and he uses this mentality in pursuing the things he wants. Gatsby is the pinnacle of lifetime success expressed in the novel. He started from nothing and managed to achieve what some would say is their ultimate American dream. It is obvious that Gatsby is a man with goals and he will achieve these goals through the test of time.

  12. Gatsby's mission is to get as wealthy as he can just to impress Daisy Buchanan and win her back. This is his mission statement because after he came back from the army he did everything he could so he could get wealthy. He did this because he still loves Daisy and knew that to win her back he had to be wealthy, like Tom is. Gatsby had to become richer than Tom in order to win Daisy back.

    1. I believe that Gatsby does need to be rich in order to get Daisy back, because people keep telling Daisy that "she should go to Tom". This is, because Tom is more rich than Gatsby and thats why Gatsby needs to be more rich than tom.

    2. I agree with you that Gatsby is trying to impress Daisy by being successful. I think she was her motivation and he doesn't really care what others think about him and his house besides what she thinks. The first time Gatsby shows Daisy his house, shes astonished, "'that huge place there?' she cried pointing. 'Do you like it?' 'I love it" (Fitzgerald 90). Gatsby wants to impress her to win her back, and so far he's doing pretty well.

      Delete
    3. I agree with this because Gatsby's goal is to get Daisy back, so he is trying to seem as much like old money as he can. That is why he has a "thin beard of raw ivy" (5) on his house, to make it seem like he has lived there for a while.

  13. Gatsby's mission statement is to fulfill the American Dream and be successful through wealth.

Gatsby comes from new money because he worked hard and it payed off which is what the American Dream is about. He aims to be successful and wealthy, because Gatsby thinks that his money will give him infinite happiness.

    1. I completely disagree with Samantha's claims. Gatsby does not actually care about his success or wealth. He only pursues these material gains because he requires them to seduce Daisy into a relationship. The true fuel to Gatsby's life is the want for his girl, the golden girl. From the novel, "It was when curiosity about Gatsby was at its highest that the lights in his house failed to go on one Saturday night- and, as obscurely as it had begun, his career as Trimalchio was over."(Gatsby, 113). As soon as Gatsby starts his fling with Daisy he abandons the old sport of throwing parties. The parties were only relevant as a means to attract Daisy.

    3. I agree with Sam, because he does try to fulfill the American dream and his life is based around being wealthy, and he wants to be wealthy to get the girl of his dreams. In the novel when Gatsby says " It took me just three years to earn the money that bought it."(Fitzgerald 95) He worked hard to get the American dream, and the his dream girl, and he did this through his hard work and wealth. Everything he does has to do with his wealth such as his parties but soon as he starts talking to Daisy,he stops throwing his extravagant parties.

  14. Gatsby's mission is "Money will get you anywhere and anything in life". I think that this would be Gatsby's mission statement, because of the parties that Gatsby has held at his house. Gatsby's new money and once he spends his money he gets more of it. So he thinks that if he has money he can keep spending it with no problem.

    1. Nick, I will back up your choice for Gatsby's mission statement mostly because in Gatsby's mind he wants many things and most of the time he gets them. Many people would ask how??, but we all know, he uses his wealth, extravagance and money. This proves the mission statement that money will get you anywhere in life. For example, Gatsby uses his "silver shirt and gold-colored tie" (Fitzgerald 89) to lure Daisy in and get what he wants.

Especially when she's going through Gatsby's shirts and said "They're such beautiful shirts" (Fitzgerald 92). But I don't believe that his "overall mission is to get Daisy back, and make is possible for her to live a happy life" because I think he also wants respect from people and be considered "old money".

  16. Gatsby's mission statement would be, "Make as much money as possible and try to impress Daisy to make he love me" I chose this representation of Gatsby because he loved Daisy so much and he tried to get her to like him. 17. Gatsby's mission statement is "make as much old money as possible and lure in the girl." Gatsby wanted to stop the "constant, turbulent riot" (Fitzgerald 99) in heart. Gatsby tries to be as successful as he can be and he thinks his happiness will be filled when he gets Daisy. So he tries to show off with his money and get a better status. Gatsby is trying to be something he's not. There's a certain level of respectability and classiness that comes with "old money". Gatsby is trying to receive respect from others, get rich and get the girl he's always wanted.

  18. Gatsby's mission statement would be "get rich and get Daisy". This is his dream because his main goal for getting all that money was to get Daisy. He told Daisy that as soon as he got rich they would be together. It is very important for Gatsby to have Daisy. Daisy is his dream girl, and in order to have her he had to get rich. That is why his mission statement would be "get rich and get Daisy".

    2. Although I agree with Gatsby's goal of winning over Daisy with money, I also believe he wants respect from the East-Eggers. This is shown throughout the book, especially in the details of his house. From the architecture to the "absolutely real- have pages and everything"(50) books in his library. Why else would he pay so much attention to detail?

  19. Gatsby's mission statement would be "to get rich, get daisy, and try and be old money". Gatsby is always trying to be like old money throughout the whole book. He is also trying to steal Daisy and make her all his. Money means everything to him and he tried to get wealthy to meet Daisy's standards.

  20. Gatsby's mission statement would be "Jay Gatsby's mission is to gain respect from everyone around him and to keep his level of wealth the same". Gatsby wants to gain respect from everyone because he wants to be a part of the old money community. Since Daisy is old money, he wants her to see him as someone who has manners and fits in. But he also wants more than just Daisy's respect, Gatsby wants Tom, Nick, Jordan and many others to see him as fitting into their group of people. Gatsby also wants his level of wealth to stay the same so he can supply for himself and for Daisy.

    1. I agree that he wants to gain respect from everyone, especially old money. He tries to imitate the life of old money by having "a factual imitation of some hotel de ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy..."(Fitzgerald 9). Ivy symbolizes how old something is and it proves a form of respect which he is trying to acheive.

    3. I appreciate your comment and how it was bold and to the point. I also totally agree with your selection of mission statement for Gatsby. I say this because Gatsby always wanted and always will want to be with his true love Daisy. He loved her so much that he used the green light across the bay to represent the hope that was reserved in his heart for her. It wasn't until Gatsby finally reunited with daisy and took that next step to fulfill his mission statement that he realized that the "colossal significance of that light had now vanished forever (Fitzgerald 98) and new hope was placed between him and Daisy in his dream to be with her forever.

  23. Gatsbys Mission statement is to provide the highest standard of life while working at the ultimate goal of courting Daisy. This is his mission because this is what hes done his entire life and is constantly, blatently worrying about. 24. Gatsby’s mission before he met Daisy was to meet Nick Carraway and use him to find Daisy. Nick out of college moved from Chicago to New York’s Wall Street to learn the bond business. He visits Daisy’s home and mentions Gatsby and his parties. Daisy replies Gatsby…. What Gatsby… anyway Nick sees the extravagant parties that Gatsby throws. One night Tom sees “an arm reaching toward the green light at the end of the dock. Nick describes the people that one to his parties as moths because they are uninvited. Gatsby invites Nick because he wants to see Daisy again and use Nick to get to her. “As soon as I arrived I made an attempt to find my host but the two of three people of whom I asked his whereabouts stared at me in such an amazed way and denied so vehemently any knowledge of his whereabouts.” (Fitzgerald 46) The party guests Nick asks deny him of his whereabouts because they simply do not nowhere he is because they were not invited to his party. As you can see Gatsby purposely invites Nick to his party to get to Daisy. He also seems a bit of a show off because he leaves his lights on in his mansion and his extravagant parties to show his power and wealth.

  26. Gatsby Mission Statement: To be accepted by everyone including old money. Gatsby is new money but wants the respect as if he was old money but also wants to keep his wealth and popularity the same. I think this would be a good mission statement for Gatsby because he always does favors for people so they will do something for him or they will like him, and all Gatsby wants is for people to like and respect him. The other reason why i think this would be a good mission statement for Gatsby is because all he wants to do is become one of the richest men in daisy life so they can be together forever and live the life that Gatsby dreamed up for himself.

  31. Gatsbys mission statement is "To do what I do best and please people with parties and being nice, and to flourish in life and have the money and woman I want so bad." This is Gatsbys mission statement because he wants to have EVERYTHING, he wants to win Daisy over and then use his money to live the perfect life for him and her also. Another reason for this is that Gatsby wants to be above everyone and have all of the wealth and fame that he feels as if he deserves.

  34. Gatsby's mission statement is "as long as you have money, you can get anything". Ever since Gatsby left Daisy he realized that he was missing something. 35. If I was in Gatsby's shoes, my mission statement would be to "capitalize on all aspects of life, including love, financial prosperity, and friendship" I assure this statement to be accurate because it explains all motives in Gatsby's life. For example, Gatsby capitalized on wealth opportunities mainly by bootlegging. Even though it was bad and illegal, he did it anyway in order to get what he wanted. Furthermore, Gatsby used his extravagance in order to capitalize on his love life by luring his true love in with it. On the other hand, Gatsby wouldn't be able to survive with out some pristine friendship and an honest companion. This is why he goes to nick who is right next door and capitalizes on the opportunity to gain the level of friendship that he needs to properly sustain himself.

  36. Gatsby's mission statement is "to become as wealthy as possible, and money will end up buying you happiness." Ever since Gatsby was a boy in New York hanging out with Dan Cody, he learned about wealthiness and how to get it. Dan Cody taught him to be as wealthy as possible and Gatsby took this advice and ran with it. Now that he's older now and is one of the wealthiest men, he thinks he can buy his happiness. After losing Daisy when he was younger, he wants to get her back with materialistic things because he knows that's what will win her back.

  37. Gatsby's mission statement is "Make as much money as I possibly can and get the girl of my dreams". This would be Gatsby's statement because when he first saw Dan Cody's yacht on the lake he knew from then on that what he really wanted was to be excessively rich. When Gatsby achieved this he was happy but not entirely happy because after he achieved all of his wealth he desired something else;Daisy, only when Gatsby had his girl would he be entirely happy.

  38. Gatsby's mission statement is "get paper, get the girl". This is Gatsby's mission because when he first met daisy at her house in Louisiana he fell in love with her immediately, from then on it was his life mission to be wed to her. But in his heart he knew the only way she would be with him is if he was wealthy. Therefore making it his life mission to get money to get Daisy. Nick mentions "her voice is full of money‘…That was it. I‘d never understood before. It was full of money – that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals‘ song of it…High in a white palace the king‘s daughter, the golden girl" (102) Everyone around town understands what requirements must be met to be wed to such a high priority woman.

The other half of the mission statement I gave Gatsby which was to regain love with Daisy fits because he loves her so much and just wanted to get back what they had in the past and to be together again. All the money he was making not only was for himself but also for Daisy because he wanted to impress her!
